The most advanced stage of breast cancer is metastatic breast cancer. The affected person has minimum survival rate or minimum life expectancy as compared to other stages of cancer. Many women are being diagnosed with breast cancer all over the world which is also one of the most common causes of cancer deaths. In the lobules which are the milk making glands and the ducts, which are tubes that carry the milk to the nipple, when malignant increase of epithelial cells, the condition is called breast cancer. Between the ages of 45 and 55 it is seen that many women are commonly affected.

Metastatic breast cancer is the most advanced type of breast cancer and is also called Stage IV cancer. It is a condition in which different regions of the body have the cancer cells due to rapid spreading action of the affected cells from the original tumor site. This means that the cancer cells from the breast area spread to other regions of the body. The cells take root in almost any part of the body, as they travel through the blood vessels and the lymphatic system. Distant metastases reach up to different organs like the liver, lungs and the bones, while metastases normally spread to areas close to the breast.

As far as bone Metastases is concerned there are two types of bone cancer – osteolytic and osteoblastic cancer. Holes are caused in bones making them susceptible to fractures and breaks in osteolytic cancer. The density of bones increases in osteoblastic cancer and makes the bones to prone to breaks and fractures. Severe pain is the outcome in both forms of cancer. When cancer cells start growing within the lungs, lung metastases occurs. When cancer cells start multiplying within the tissues of the liver, liver metastases develops.

Symptoms of metastatic breast cancer:

Metastatic breast cancer symptoms are many. The affected person develops a breast ulcer or a breast lump. There is itching or scaling which is called pruritus on the nipple, continuous itching in breast skin, sudden increase in the mature size of breast, regional pain and weight loss, sudden discharge from the nipples, bone fractures and bone pain and change in the texture and color of the areola are all potential signs.

Diagnosis and treatment of metastatic breast cancer:

A staging process has to be undergone by the patient. This includes imaging tests like bone scan, chest X-ray, C T scan, mammogram, and MRI scan to diagnose the location and size of the cancer. The staging process includes tests like biopsy and clinical breast exams. Focus is on extending the metastatic breast cancer life expectancy and providing relief to the patient as it is impossible to kill of the existing cancer cells. As far as the treatment of this cancer is concerned, it could slow down the growth of cancer cells and may shrink the existing tumors. Surgery is followed by radiation as well as chemotherapy and hormonal therapy. The treatment aims the local regions as well as the organs to which the cancer has metastasized.

Life expectancy and prognosis:

It is the type of treatment received that determines the life expectancy of a metastasis breast cancer patient. Life expectancy in a woman can be 2 to 3 years as revealed by statistics. It is seen that about 30% of these cases go on to live for 5 years and even after 10 years 10% do survive! Life expectancy of metastatic breast cancer or the survival rate of a patient diagnosed with this IV stage breast cancer if 20%. It is on the amount of metastasis, location of the tumor, the stage between the relapse and the organ affected that the prognosis for stage IV breast cancer mainly depends.

Research on breast cancer indicates that the 5 year survival rate for women affected by breast cancer is around 80%. Approximately 88% of the women detected early with the disease survive longer, say for about the next ten years. With the advancement in methods of treatment, screening and staging, survival rates or metastasis breast cancer life expectancy have improved fortunately.

As long as cancer limits itself to the breast area only, it is considered as ‘clinically safe’ cancer. In metastasis breast cancer, the cancer spreads to other parts of the body which is dangerous particularly when vital organs such as kidney, liver, intestine etc are infected. Prognosis of this cancer depends on the individual health of the immune system of the person. If the prognosis is bad it does not mean that you have lesser time left. In spite of having a not so good prognosis it has been reported that many patients live a quality and healthy life for years. Your spirit to fight cancer should not be affected by a bad prognosis, ever.

New hope is brought to those afflicted with breast cancer in recent years with medical advances being made and breast cancer treatment. Surgical methods are used in mastectomy and lumpectomy which is followed by hormone therapy, radiation therapy and if required chemotherapy. During a lifetime, one in every eight women is affected by breast cancer, a cancer which is also referred to as breast carcinoma. The highest type of cancer after lung cancer is breast cancer which kills thousands of women the world over.

Some women seem to be susceptible to breast cancer, and there are certain risk factors they are most exposed to, but nobody knows for sure why. There are some risks that cannot be helped! There are personal risk factors, genetic factors, age factors, and many other risks. As far as personal risk factors, the phase during menopause after the age of 55, and that before the age of 12 is among the leading personal risk factors. The risk of getting breast cancer is increased greatly with the presence of the genes BRCA1 and BRCA2 which are genetic factors. If there have been incidences of breast cancer amongst any member in the family it is advisable for women to get themselves tested.

The chances of getting breast cancer are increased with advancing age. Being childless, having a child after 35 years of age, having dense breasts, being overweight or on hormone replacement therapy, using birth control pills, consuming alcohol are some of the risks associated with breast cancer. Though the number of cases is not alarming, breast cancer does affect men too. A lump formation in the breast, changes in the size or shape of the breast, fluid discharge from the nipple are some of the symptoms of breast cancer.

Methods of breast cancer treatment:

Lumpectomy and Mastectomy:

One of the main methods of breast cancer treatment is surgery. Even after more than a century, this treatment is still popular and is usually succeeded by breast cancer radiation treatment. Along with hormone therapy several patients may also need chemotherapy. In lumpectomy the tissue that is cancerous is surgically removed followed by radiation. Lumpectomy is also called breast conserving surgery. Mastectomy is removing the breast surgically. Along with subsequent tests checking for cancer in the lymph nodes located near the affected breast, both these types of surgeries can be combined. Things have changed a fair amount as far as breast surgery like mastectomy and lumpectomy is concerned in the recent years. The objective of most surgeries today is to preserve as much healthy part of the breast along with the tissues surrounding the breast as possible. Today mastectomy or removal of breast is a more refined procedure of breast cancer treatment and a far less drastic option than it used to be decades back.

Radiation therapy:

As far as radiation therapy is concerned it is a targeted and highly effective method of destroying the cells of cancer which remain after the surgery. On the effected part like the lymph nodes and the breast area, beams of high energy radiation are concentrated. Both cancer cells as well as normal cells get damaged when they are in the beam’s path. Concentrated radiation affects cancer cells more as compared to normal cells. Cancer cells grow and make new cells at a faster rate. These two activities make cancer cells vulnerable to the damaging effects of radiation. Besides this, as compared to healthy cells, cancer cells are less organized. It is more difficult for these cells to recover by repairing themselves hence these cells get destroyed by radiation very easily. Normal cells are able to survive as they are able to repair themselves better.

Chemotherapy and hormone therapy:

Chemotherapy goes through the blood stream which means that the whole body is affected. From the original location of the cancer, some of the cancer cells spread to some other parts of the body, and the purpose of this breast cancer treatment is to kill cancer cells. This treatment is effective because the drugs hinder rapid division of cells. Cells in the intestinal tract, blood, mouth, nails, nose, vagina and hair also divide rapidly and these too are affected in this treatment. For the treatment to be easier on the system, these days chemo has been refined.

Against hormone receptor positive breast cancer, home therapy is a highly effective breast cancer treatment. It is used to block the turning on ability of the hormone estrogen and also stimulate the growth of cancer cells. This treatment is also referred to anti estrogen therapy sometimes. Cancer affects the lives of women physically as well as mentally hence they are more concerned about breast cancer than other types of cancer. By self examining the breast, clinical breast examination and mammograms it becomes easier to trace and treat this dreaded cancer.

Treatment and diagnosis of breast cancer has been possible due to public support in the awareness of breast cancer. Early detection of breast cancer and better treatments has reduced the number of mortality rates and the survival rates of breast cancer have improved significantly.

An accelerated type of breast cancer is IBC or inflammatory breast cancer. This cancer cannot be detected by a mammogram or by ultrasound. Almost one to three percent of all breast cancers are inflammatory breast cancers, though IBC is a relatively rare form of cancer. The affected breast becomes swollen and inflamed, which is one of the signs of this type of a breast cancer. The cancer cells block the lymphatic cells that exist under the breast skin which results in blockage of lymph flow, leading to inflamed redness which is also termed as mastitis. All these are characteristics of inflammatory breast cancer.

Symptoms:

In inflammatory breast cancer a lump generally does not occur and the person cannot even feel the lump, unlike the other types of breast cancer. The cancer develops as nests or sheets which clog up the lymphatic system underneath the skin. The symptoms are very often attributed to other diseases such as an infection and it is because of this that the diagnosis of inflammatory cancer takes a very long time. There are a number of breast cancer symptoms which need to be looked at seriously. A tumor is formed in the cells of breasts, which is called cancer of the breast. Though breast cancer is more widespread in women it may happen to both men as well as women. Right from changes in the skin to swelling in the breasts, breast cancer symptoms vary widely. An infection or a cyst might be the outcome of a non cancerous situation and the symptoms are very much like signs of breast cancer.

Changes and pain in the breast:

Many a times the inflammation in the breast is often mistaken as an infection which is then treated with antibiotics. It is when the inflammation refuses to subside that you need to get a referral to a specialist in breast cancer. You will need to ask for a breast biopsy too. There is a lot of redness in either whole or part of the breast which is one of the most distinctive characteristics of inflammatory breast cancer. Redness may come and go. The area of the breast may also become warm. The breast skin thickens and the texture of skin turns to that of an orange peel, along with redness on the breast. There can be bruises that do not go away easily. Discharge from the nipple and retraction of the nipple are the other breast cancer symptoms. The breast suddenly swells up and there is itching sensation. Also there is swelling in the lymph nodes in the underarm and neck. Many women affected by inflammatory breast cancer have a mass lump in the breast which cannot be easily detected in a breast examination. The breast becomes harder than normal thus making detection difficult. Within a period of few weeks breast cancer symptoms occur.

Diagnosis of breast cancer:

It is because of the nature of the breast cancer symptoms that diagnosis becomes difficult. An infection is commonly the cause of a breast getting red and swollen. Infection is the first thing diagnosed by any doctor. Breast feeding can cause infections and such infections subside with proper antibiotic treatment. However antibiotics do not get any response from breast cancer. A physical examination is conducted primarily, and mammogram, breast MRI, and ultrasound are also prescribed once breast cancer symptoms are noticed.

To confirm the diagnosis a biopsy is usually recommended. Although the redness and swelling worsens, there are some cases where a biopsy of inflammatory breast cancer comes back clear. This shows that to get an accurate diagnosis and to confirm diagnosis is rather tricky. For inflammatory breast cancer, chemotherapy is used as an upfront treatment which can be followed by radiation and then surgery. Also anti-estrogen and Herceptin may be used. Therapies like Avastin also have a major role to play in the treatment of inflammatory breast cancer. Depending on each individual case the sequence as well as the kind of treatment is defined.

As part of the monthly health concern routine of every woman, self examination of the breast should be compulsory. In case any changes are experienced in the breast, you must visit a physician immediately. At greater risks are women over forty and hence they should get a mammogram done every year as well as a physical check up by a physician. Chances of beating this cancer are better, when breast cancer symptoms are noticed at the earliest. Research and personal assimilation of medical breakthroughs help a lot in remaining well informed and better prepared.

A diagnosis requiring systemic breast cancer treatment is really scary, but with the variety of treatment options and a continued study of the disease, you still have a better chance of survival than the last generation. However, the treatment generally has to be much more aggressive and probably toxic in nature, which means you might actually feel worse, before you get better. The key is to keep in close communication with your health care team, so they can alter the cancer treatment or provide medication to help you through the process.

Ongoing Studies

Today, there are already ongoing studies in systemic breast cancer treatment. Unfortunately, even when new approaches in the fight against cancer are discovered, it takes between 4-10 years of clinical studies before the newest innovations are available for the general public.

The reason it takes so long is that sufficient data regarding the continued success of the treatment and the percentage of patients that remain cancer free or have a relapse must be studied. Fortunately, the breast cancer patients that agree to be subjects of study do not have to take the risks of the previous generation.

In the past, women agreed to be a part of one of two groups-ladies that actually got treatment for their cancer and those that did not. It was determined by the flip of a coin. Then, the survival rate of each group after a mastectomy was calculated.

Today, women agreeing to participate in clinical trials still get the accepted standard of treatment, or the newest treatment that has not been approved to-date. Both group get treatment for their cancer, and no one has to go without and feel like they have to sacrifice their life for the advancement of medicine.

The Harsh Reality

In truth, systemic treatment for breast cancer is a nasty business. Because the jury is still out on how different cancers spread once they leave local control, a doctor cannot predict what will happen with your cancer in the future-whether some undetected cells have escaped the boundaries of the breast. Since every woman is different, you doctor can only tell you about statistical information learned up to this point.

However, based on several factors, the doctor can give you an educated guess. For example, if you likely have less than a 10% chance of the cancer going any further than the breast, chances are you will not want to undergo chemotherapy, because the danger to your body is greater than the cancer at this point.

But, if you odds are 20-40% or higher, the doctor will probably suggest undergoing chemotherapy to kill any cancer cells that have likely strayed elsewhere in the body. Unfortunately, chemotherapy cannot differentiate between the good and bad cells, so healthy cells are sacrificed. Fortunately, healthy cells do not divide and multiple as quickly. So, they can sometimes repair themselves before the next onslaught of chemotherapy.

Aggressiveness

The aggressiveness of your systemic cancer treatment will depend on the type of breast cancer you have, how pervasive it is, and if it is traveled to other parts of your body like the lungs or bone. The doctor can run tests to tell if the current regime of cancer treatment is effective by measuring the size of the tumors at different points during the course of the treatment. If the tumors are shrinking, it also means that the cancer cells traveling in the blood are fewer in number.

To determine how well the cancer treatment is working, the doctor might order a C-T scan or a PET scan, to take very detailed pictures of your body. The test can look at every part of your body, layer by layer to see how the cancer cells are reacting to the aggressive cancer treatment.

However, these scans are very expensive and are quite extensive, so the doctor cannot order one any time you or he wants. It may even take some convincing to get the insurance company to agree that they are a necessary part of your treatment process. Plus, it takes time for the treatments to do their job and make a significant difference.

Half the Battle

So, even as sick as you might feel, it is important to try and be patient, eat as well as you can, and try to maintain healthy habits, so your body has the strength to fight off the cancer invasion. Fighting a cancer disease is difficult, but your attitude will be half of the battle. Patients with a positive attitude are more likely to realize a cure and live longer than those that give up to the monster within the body.

In conclusion, there is nothing fun about being told that you will need to undergo systemic breast cancer treatment. But, it does not mean that you cannot beat the cancer that has invaded your body. It simply means that more aggressive treatments will be necessary and that you will have to believe you can get well. Your positive attitude is half the battle in defeating this disease.

You have recently been diagnosed with breast cancer. The news is devastating. Even if you have a history of the disease in the family, there is no way a woman can truly be prepared for the news. Unless you have never turned on the television, read magazines, or talked to other women, you know that the road ahead is not going to be easy-to say the least. So, what do you do now? What is going to happen next? How are you and your family going to cope with whatever lies ahead? No one can really know the answer to all of the questions and concerns today. But, there is something you can do, right now-today that will help you face an uncertain future.

Take Charge

The best thing you can do for yourself today is to decide to take charge. Be proactive. Your health care team is working for you, not the other way around. If there is something that makes you uncomfortable, or you do not feel right about the care being received, speak out.

Of course, your family doctor and oncologist are educated and experienced. (If not, find another right now.) However, these people see hundreds of patients every year, and no two women are alike. The professionals may have excellent recommendations, but they are not you. How the cancer is treated and the procedures that are undertaken to kill this cancer are up to you.

Ask Questions

As part of dealing with your cancer, ask questions. Never apologize for wanting to know about your body, health care choices, and what to expect. You have a right to know. If your health care provider does not take the time to give you the answers, you may want to find a team that makes you feel comfortable. Cancer is not cured overnight. In order to cope with the continuing treatment, you need to trust that the doctors, nurses, and technicians have your best interests at heart.

Become Educated

Even though the health care team will give you information about your breast cancer treatment options, you need to become educated. Learn as much as you possibly can about your breast cancer and the treatment options that are available to you. For example, will you need a mastectomy or will a lumpectomy suffice?

Will you need radiation and/or chemotherapy? Will you get really sick, or will you be able to continue working? Will you need help taking care of children or the house? What kind of support system will you need in the coming months?

Do not totally depend on the doctors to give you all the answers. Be proactive and learn all you can about what is going on with your body. Knowing what to expect, good or bad, will give you more strength and confidence to face cancer treatment and recovery.

A Second Opinion

After being diagnosed with breast cancer, it is always a good idea to get a second opinion. Although it will mean more testing, some expense, and a little more time, it will be well worth the effort. With so many different cancer diagnostic tools and treatment options available today, it is important to confirm a diagnosis.

Also, health care providers are not created equal. While one doctor will recommend an immediate mastectomy, the other might feel that a less invasive procedure will remove all of the cancer. Then, it will be up to you. You will have to decide what you want to do with your own body. No one can/should make that decision on your behalf.

Seek Support

Whenever facing a serious diagnosis like breast cancer, it is a good idea to seek support and take a trusted friend or family member with you to doctor’s appointments or treatments. Not only will the moral support help give you the strength to cope, but they can speak for you, if you cannot speak for yourself. They will also be able to remember details or ask questions that you might forget.

For example, if you have to undergo a surgical procedure, it is a good idea to have someone there with you in the hospital. Even though they do their best, health care providers are not going to be by your bedside around the clock.

However, a friend or family member can make demands for your well being or comfort, if the medical staff does not notice your need right away. You will have a voice, even when you are asleep or unable to communicate your needs properly.

In short, the only thing good about being diagnosed with breast cancer is the ability to get treatment and do whatever it takes to save your life. But, even with the increased survivability of the disease, the road to good health will not be an easy one. Therefore, even though you are devastated and confused, the best thing you can do for yourself at this point is to take charge. Speak up, ask questions, seek answers, and make informed choices about what is best for you.

If you have just been diagnosed with breast cancer, chances are that panic mode is taking over, and you want that cancer out of your body yesterday. In truth, the mutated cancer cells have probably been in your body for years, and you simply did not know. Although that does not mean you can let it go for years and worry about it later, it does give you a little time to make an informed decision about the health care options that are right for you. For example, if the disease is caught in the early stages, you definitely need to understand breast cancer local control.

You are not Alone

Naturally, you have been devastated by the news that you have breast cancer. But, before you panic and start planning a memorial service, remember that you are not alone. One in eight women has stood in your shoes.

Medical science makes breast cancer research a priority. The survival rate for breast cancer has greatly increased in just the past few years. No one is guaranteed the next minute, let alone old age. But, you have an excellent chance of being cured and living a happy and productive life for years to come. You will have a health care team that dedicates their lives to the battle against cancer and helping you beat this monster.

Not all Cancers are Created Equal

While researching breast cancer and trying to find a cure, scientists have found out that there are different types of breast cancer. Some are slow growing, while others are on the fast track. How the doctors and you decide to treat the cancer depends on its veracity.

However, if the doctor says the treatment is for local control of the disease that is good. It simply means that the cancer is still in the breast area and has not metastasized to other parts of the body or gotten into the bloodstream yet. Your chances of realizing a cure faster are greater.

But, if it is a fast growing cancer, you will have to get that second opinion, and decide on a course of cancer treatment as soon as possible. You do not want the cancer to leave the breast area and continue to move on, affecting other parts of the body. You still should not panic, because that will not do you any good emotionally or physically.

But, you do not have the time to feel sorry for yourself and wallow in your misery either. Put on a stiff upper lip and help the health care provides get control of this beast. You can have a meltdown later, after the treatments are over.

Methods of Local Control

The methods the doctor will use to get rid of your cancer will depend on the type of your cancer, family history, and your personal choices. For example, doctors from the old school of thought and some patients simply want to opt for mastectomy to get rid of the cancer and plan for a breast reconstruction later.

It is important to make the decision whether or not to undergo reconstruction before the cancer surgery for two reasons. Sometimes, the doctor will opt to remove the cancer and have a plastic surgeon handy to facilitate an immediate reconstruction. Alternatively, the doctor can try and leave part of the breast or enough skin to help in a plastic surgeon effect a more natural reconstruction.

Some women choose to have a mastectomy and not undergo reconstruction. Comfortable in their own bodies, and just happy to have the cancer excised, they would rather wear a prosthetic in public, so their clothes fit properly and people do not stare.

Less Invasive Method

Depending on the type of cancer and its size and location, some doctors might suggest a lumpectomy. During surgery, the cancer and a wide margin of healthy cells is removed to make sure all of the disease has been eradicated. Just to make sure, radiation may be required to kill of any other potentially undetected mutating cells, so the cancer will have less chance of paying another unwelcomed visit in the future.
By removing only the lump, it is easier to reconstruct the breast. Especially for some patients, this option alleviates some of the emotional trauma that naturally accompanies a diagnosis of breast cancer.

In short, treatment for breast cancer is a big deal. But, thank goodness medical science has greatly improved survival of this devastating disease. Back in your mother’s day, a breast cancer diagnosis meant they should get their affairs in order. Many women felt so alone, because breast cancer was not an appropriate subject for conversation. But, you are not alone. You will have a team of health care providers dedicated to beating breast cancer. Know that whatever choices you make in treating your breast cancer are the right ones, as long as you decide that is what is best for you.

What Could Happen?

There are several types of breast cancer defined by the stage they are in and the overall composition of them. If you are suffering from breast cancer, you should ask your doctor to tell you what type of cancer you have as well as what stage the cancer is in.

There are treatment options available for most situations, depending on what stage of cancer you are in. Understanding these facts will help you get the most help for your health and improve your lifespan.

What Doctors Are Looking For

In a breast cancer diagnosis, doctors need to take into consideration various factors about the actual cancer cells they find. The course of action they take to improve your health is based on these factors. Here are some things that they will look at.

What is the size of the cancer? Small lumps and tumors are often easier to treat and easier to overcome than others. Yet, if the tumor is larger, they will need to take more aggressive measures to treat it. A large tumor doesn’t have to mean death, though.

What is the growth rate: Doctors will do breast cancer tests to help determine what the level of intensity of growth is. A fast growing, aggressive style of cancer needs more aggressive means of help. Some tumors are very low key and are easily treated, though.

What type of behavior does it have? In some situations, the behavior of a tumor can be predictable. In other words, doctors understand the way it is growing and the speed. Other situations are much more unpredictable, which can lead to other means of treatment.

Doctor will characterize the tumors of breast cancer by their size, the tumor grade, the hormone receptor status of the tumor, the margins of resection and the HER2/Neu oncogene overexpression. These elements may seem like a foreign language, but to doctors they can better tailor their treatment when they have as much information as possible.

There are other concerns with breast cancer as well. For example, male breast cancer is a type of cancer that forms in men. Men do have a limited amount of breast tissue, which can actually grow in size depending on the overall health and weight of an individual, their exposure to various outside elements as well as other factors. This type of cancer is rare, occurring in only 2000 or so cases per year.

In addition to this, doctors are also concerned about the metastatic breast cancer rates. Metastatic breast cancer is a type that spreads through the body by the blood stream. The cancer cells are able to break through the tissue and they can then spread to various areas of the body. When this happens, those cancer cells can latch onto various other organs n the body and in turn develop tumors in that region. This is a highly worrisome situation because the rate of additional complications is high.

Once doctors have a good understanding of the types of breast cancer they have to work with, they can choose the best treatment for breast cancer. Treatments are decided upon by the actual case, so what works for you may not be right for someone else. Doctors tailor your health to the cancer you have.

If you are suffering from breast cancer, ask your doctor more about what type of cancer you have. Learn as much as you can and consider alternative treatments that work in complimentary form to your current one. Doctors can help you overcome breast cancer with the help of these treatment options, most often being successful.

The Seriousness of Stage 4

Stage 4 breast cancer is one of the worst stages that you can have. In this stage, the cancer is very aggressive and has moved to be at its most dangerous form. Doctors will still provide you with excellent treatment options and many patients do survive breast cancer at this stage. In this advanced form, though, there may be limits. Unfortunately, according to the American Cancer Society, there is only a 20 percent chance of survival beyond five years for people who have this stage of cancer.

What Are Stages

Doctors have developed a system of stages to help them know which level the breast cancer is in. In the earliest stages, the cancer is very small and often times go undetected. As the tumor grows in size, it will move up in terms of stage level. Stages range from stage 1 (or stage I) to stage 4 (or stage IV.) There are also subdivisions in each stage. Doctors will rate the disease by size, but also by other factors including the amount and type of growth of the stage as well as the overall aggressiveness of the stage. Doctors are also concerned about the overall way that the tumor is growing. Most will grow in a “normal” pattern, which allows them to tailor treatment to that specific stage easier. Others are unpredictable and this often can be one of the most troublesome types of cancer.

Defining Stage

In order for doctors to know which breast cancer stage you are in, they will need to do a wide variety of tests. They will do this in the effort to fully understand the condition, so they can give you the best treatment options available. Generally, doctors will do tests that include x rays that are highly intense, as well as blood work and much more. Once they are confident that they know all there is to know about the tumor or the breast cancer cells in your body, they will define which stage they believe the condition to be. In most situations, doctors are able to define the stages after a few tests, but may reinforce their information with more. Over time, they will continue to monitor the situation to insure they have a full understanding of the progression of breast cancer.

Defining Treatment

Once doctors know which stage of breast cancer you are in, they can tailor your breast cancer treatments around it. This often includes several options. Whenever possible and available, they may use breast cancer surgery as their first line of defense. This will allow them to remove any and all types of tumors they find. In earlier stages, they may not have to remove the entire breast, either, for this to be helpful.

Doctors will nearly always combat the growth of tumors and breast cancer in general with medications. The right breast cancer drug for you will be the one that is the best at helping improving your overall health, based on the stage of your breast cancer. A wide range of treatment options are available including chemotherapy and radiation, all of which have been very helpful at improving the success rate of treatment for breast cancer.

Being educated about the level of breast cancer you have is important. Doctors will provide you with all of the tools you’ll need to make it through your cancer that are available, but sometimes it is not enough. The best way to avoid the worries of stage four breast cancer is to keep from getting it. Early detection is the best tool available to you. You can be a part of the successful thousands that have beaten cancer.

Cancer That Spreads

Metastatic breast cancer is a situation in which the cancer has moved from the breast tissue into the rest of the body. Because breast cancer can do this, it is highly likely that your doctor will work hard to help you avoid this happening,

by giving you full body treatments for the cancer. There is usually no warning that the cancer will move. There is generally no method that shows the cancer is able to move easily or if it will not. Therefore, doctors will treat your cancer individually.

Those who are suffering from breast cancer can see metastatic situations at any time. It does not matter if you are in the early stages of breast cancer or in stage IV breast cancer. In this condition, doctors will still have treatments for breast cancer that can help you overcome the condition. Yet, they will change their scope. Many times, the goal of treating this cancer is to give you the best chance of putting the cancer into remission (non active or growing stage) while still keeping the quality of life.

Some of the treatment options for metastatic breast cancer are in the best situation if:

The breast cancer has not spread to major organs of the body, this includes your lungs, your brain or your stomach, for example.

The breast cancer that has spread to organs in your body has not spread to more than three organs or other parts of the body.

The cancer will respond best if there are hormones called estrogen and progesterone hormone receptors found in the cancer cells.

The tumor is still responding to the treatments using hormones or chemotherapy.

And, that you have not had various types of cancer treatment or many rounds of it.

If you do not have any of these situations happening in your body, and you are concerned that treatments will not work for you, don’t give up. The fact is that this type of breast cancer diagnosis is still possible to overcome. Doctors know of various ways to help treat breast cancer that has metastatic qualities to it and can often help put the cancer into remission for years to come.

The type of treatment that you’ll get is dependent on various factors. For example, in some situations, breast cancer surgery can still be performed to remove any type of breast tissue that is infected, or could be infected, which would remove the cancer cells, in effect, and keep the disease from spreading. Other treatments that work well when the cancer has already spread include hormone treatments that are aggressive as well as chemotherapy treatments, especially if they were helpful in fighting the breast cancer.

The breast cancer statistics show that there are many ways that doctors can fight this condition. It does take some time to work through the process, and people do sometimes not make it through, yet, your chances of surviving and overcoming this disease are significantly higher than they were just a few years ago. Additionally, new research is readily available to help you as well.

As you consider the various options you have, consider the benefits of working with trusted doctors. If you have metastatic breast cancer, you have a new challenge, but not a life sentence. The fact is that many people are able to benefit from treatment and overcoming this disease is possible. Talk to your doctor about your individual case and learn what options in treatment are available to you. In most cases, there will be a wide range of options for doctors to select from.

Do You Know About Male Breast Cancer?

Each year, thousands of women are diagnosised with breast cancer, but there are also several hundred men that are diagnosised with male breast cancer. For those struggling with this disease, it becomes very important to consider the options you have. Perhaps the most important thing is to know that the disease is out there and that it can affect virtually any man at any time. Male breast cancer happens in only one percent of all breast cancer diagnosis each year. This amounts to about 1900 men each year. While it is a very rare disease, it is also one that needs to be closely monitored.

Learning More

Breast cancer awareness is perhaps the most important part of this disease because many men do not realize it can happen to them, and they do not realize that these conditions can affect them. Part of the study of this condition has shown that when breast cancer is detected early in the body, it can be overcome easier through the help of various methods of breast cancer treatment.

Many people believe that men do not have breasts, but in fact, they do have breast tissue. This tissue may be completely flat on your chest, in fact. In some people, the breast do develop somewhat. They may become bigger than the average man’s breast, which means that they can also develop breast gland tissue, where many cancers are found. In addition to this men can experience breasts that are larger due to some medications they take, or because they have high levels of some specific types of hormones. Unfortunately, because there are not many cases of men’s breast cancer, the research on this condition is limited. Yet, breast cancer research is constantly being done.

What is breast cancer? Many people are unsure about what this health scare is about. In men, breast cancer can happen because of age, with men over 60 at the highest risk. In addition, if you have a high level of estrogen, you too are at risk because cell growth is triggered by estrogen. This comes from being overweight, having liver disease or even being exposed to estrogens in the environment.

There are various types of breast cancer today, each one with its unique pattern and treatment options. Sometimes the causes of breast cancer are unknown. Other times, they can be estimated. For example, if you have a high level of exposure to radiation, this could be an indication of an increased risk of developing breast cancer. Family history of breast cancer can also be a reason for worry, as can exposure to products with DTT in them.

If you have been diagnosised with breast cancer, the chances of overcoming it are good. Many people find that they are able to overcome this cancer through chemotherapy, as well as other drug treatments. Doctors have a number of different types of treatment options for those suffering from breast cancer.

One of the most important tools available in the fight against breast cancer is awareness. Early detection is the key factor in saving lives, as the chances of full recovery when the cancer is detected early on is much more successful. Doctors are developing medications and treatment options that can work for nearly all cases of cancer, but getting to the doctor at the first signs of a problem are much more important. If you believe something has happened to change the breast tissue in your body, you should seek out the help of your doctor to be tested and cleared of any male breast cancer risk.
